Buying a boat seems to me to be a lot like having a baby. The anticipation alone of yacht ownership comes wrapped up in all the highs and lows of any starry eyed new parent. Without a doubt, it’s been an exciting and sometimes painful experience.
For us, there is an additional sense of the surreal. Our dream, after 25 years, is finally at hand and the opportunities on the horizon seem endless.
This new chapter in our lives was conceived well before the ink was dried on our marriage vows. However at that time of our lives “the dream” was more or less relegated to the realm of fantasy, to be brought out only on special occasions as a means to escape the daily rigors of life. You know the ones I’m talking about . . . jobs, children, homework, ballgames, etc. The list is endless. In spite of the daily challenges we never lost sight of our hopes and dreams and they continued to surface periodically over the years and for a short while each time we would escape into them and imagine the possibilities.
But, I digress.
We have come to a waypoint in our journey of life and our dream is now a reality. So taking a leap of faith we are cashing out, closing up shop, and delivering that 12 ton infant. They say that all good things come to those who wait and our wait is over. The painful birth is unfolding and we greet it with open arms. Monty and I look forward to acquiring the necessary skillset to survive sailing on the open ocean and as a by-blow, expanding our gray matter in the immersion of a new lifestyle.
So come along with us as Monty and I learn the ins and outs of living on a boat. You’ll get the good, the bad and the ugly as we live the life we have always dreamed; the life of full time live aboards navigating the coastal waterways.
And perhaps one day, if I’m brave enough, a little blue water passage.
